What's On Pool
Tournament 2000!

Last Saturday, 14 October, the first lucky couple had a whale of a time, cruising from Tequila House (those margaritas certainly helped the winning couple keep going as the partying went on!) round town and taking in Kristina Arbakaite? show at River Palace.
To have a go yourself, simply fax Gala (tel. 490-7199) saying why you should win one of these weekly trips.

Just think, maybe soon that limo'll be pulling up outside your house!

Hair Magicians at Dynamo Lux

On 11 October, Kyiv's leading hair designers and devoted jazz fans gathered together in Dynamo Lux for an unprecedented Londa-2000 Show, an event demonstrating Londa's latest achievements in the world of hair colour. Young, talented hair colourists participated in various contests, and the club's daredevils didn't mind their hair dyed pink, purple or orange! Meanwhile, Ukrainian jazz bands, such as the Yuri Kalnichenko Quartet, Taxi and the Birds treated the public to the classics of traditional jazz and the hits of jazz-rock, funk and fusion. 'This is an important night for our company,' said Londa's general manager Peter Schtoltz. 'I am impressed by the talent of Ukrainian hair designers. They are young, brave and are not afraid to push the boundaries.'

Honouring United Nations with a Run

508 years ago on 12 October, Columbus discovered America. Spain as well as other Spanish-speaking countries celebrate this day as their national holiday. The Spanish embassy in Kyiv marked the occasion with Span-ish film days at Dom Kino and a holiday reception on the 12th October at the Rus Hotel. As always, the event gathered a nice mixture of diplomats, business representatives and the cultural community both Spanish and local, giving them a chance to see each other in a not so formal atmosphere.

Latin Charity Night

USD6,000 was raised for charity during the seventh Latin American Night organised by the IWCK Spanish-Speaking Group, on 14 October. Over 300 guests turned out for the annual event, prepared to breathe a bit of hot Latin American air in the centre of Kyiv, although the event had changed venue this year, and was held in the Lavra Gallery. Delicious food was provided by Arizona Catering and the opportunity to chat to other guests ensured that the evening started on a good note.
The show programme began on a classical note, featuring National Organ and Chamber Music musicians and dancers of the National Opera. However, there was a real treat in store as the ballroon dancing duo ?rand Duet?performed a piece entitled 'The Latin Dream'. The contagious cha-cha-cha lifted everybody from their seats and onto the dance floor, where the Duet's Marina Andrusenko and Alexei Grabovsky were ready to show everyone some basic steps. A dance contest followed with the lucky winners getting a bottle of brand new Russian Standard vodka. After dinner and dancing, there was even more treats in store! The evening's Grand Raffle offered so many prizes, that a tenth of the guests

walked away with gifts ranging from Swiss watches from Raymond Weil, to two pairs of return tickets from British Airways, and weekend car rentals from Hertz and AVIS. Mrs.Isis Wirth, on behalf of the IWCK and SSG, wishes to thank all the sponsors and guests for their kind generosity.

The Spicey Side of Life

"To be honest, I'd never heard of Kyiv before, but I must say I am quite impressed!" Baby Spice, from the Tribute Band, Spicey Girls, announced, while enjoying a well-earned fag, after their lively set at 'River Palace'. The Spice Girls are famous throughout the world. Their catchy tunes, simple dance routines and distinct personalities are all part of the package which has introduced "Girl Power" to the world. However, Ukraine's women still do not seem enjoy this sisterly solidarity which unites women in the Western world. In fact, when I spoke with one Ukrainian friend about the possibility of 'us girls' going out together, without the men, her instant question was "But who would pay?"
Maybe that is the reason why the Spice Girls' look-alikes received a warmer welcome from the male members of the River Palace audience. "The men were well up for it", Posh Spice observed, "But the women seemed a little more reserved!" This difference was certainly highlighted in the reaction fso I'm reminded again of Baby's post-gig statement, and, to be honest, Girls, we'd never heard of you before - but we were also quite impressed!

What's On Pool Tournament 2000!

Top man:
Tournament winner
Dima Voronin at the table

The inaugural What's On Pool Tournament drew a cosmopolitan crowd over the weekend of October 13-15 as an international mix of billiards fans packed out Moskovska? Gold Cup restaurant looking for a piece of the action. Gold Cup's relaxed atmosphere provided the ideal backdrop for such an international event, with players battling it out over two days of heats before the field was finally reduced to six finalists drawn from across Europe. Italian Enzo Damiani gave the top shots a run for their money, but the undisputed cue king for the day was Dima Varonin, who took top spot from local boy Serhiy Vaskovskiy, while Swiss banker Simeone Matsonet took a noble third place. Players and fans later had a chance to share a few laughs and relax after the final frames at a post-tournament cocktail party hosted by Gold Cup. Special thanks to event sponsors Ukraine Inter-national Airlines, Persha Gildia Vodka, SuperNova Radio, Karin Models, and Leon Real Estate. Watch this space for more such events!
